The trails are well marked for the most part (white blazes) on trees or rock the mark the trail. Even without the markings the AT is pretty well worn and fairly easy to follow.

In the Smoky Mountain National Park you are required to stay in the shelters unless they are full and then you can tent in the areas at the shelters. At the shelters you can have a fire and grill if desired. Most of the fires during my trip were more for heat than cooking.
